The transmitter room was in an uproar . Mercant and several scientists were expecting them. Their conversations fell silent as Crest and Michalovna entered the room.
Crest glanced at the transmitter that now looked more complete than a few hours earlier. There was a strange ozone-like smell in the air, and a longer look at the transmitter revealed that blue sparks appeared to be dancing out of if like St. Elmoâs fire in some places.
âImpressive technology,â said Crest.
âWe were hoping you would tell us that itâs an Arkonide secret,â replied Mercant drily.
He looked at Crest inquiringly. Crest had dressed after the doctorâs examination, but the clipboard in his hand made him look as though he were an accountant from another century who had turned up to take an inventory of the equipment.
âIâm sorry to have to disappoint you there,â answered Crest. âThis is not Arkonide technology. Itâs...different. Probably more advanced. Much more advanced, when I think about it.â
âBut what does it do? And who created it?â Mercant looked inquisitively at the transmitter.
âA working transmitter, if Iâm not mistaken. It creates a path to another place.â And this other place will hopefully bring me closer to the solution to the great mysteryâthe mystery of eternal life! This technology is way beyond anything we Arkonides could make.
Mercantâs voice jolted him out of his thoughts. âThen who created it? How did it get here?â
âI donât know,â replied Crest. âBut whoever built it certainly knew what they were doing...and the device would not be in an Arkonide base unless somebody was intending to use it here or it was set up for them to use here. And thatâs exactly what Iâd like to do nowâuse it.â
A silence fell over the room. Everybody looked at him incredulously. Mercant was the first to find his voice again. âCrest, you are much too important to us. Without you, weâd just be humans among humans. Weâd be on our own with all this,â he made a sweeping gesture that was intended to include the deepsea dome âCompletely alone.â
Crest gave an inscrutable smile. âThen, Mr. Mercant youâll be in the same position with Arkonide technology as I am with that thing there.â He pointed, to the transmitter. âIâm actually an Arkonide Derengar. Thereâs no work for this in your language. Iâd translate it as being something between an explorer and a scientist. I am just as fascinated by this technology as you are by ours. I simply have to know.â And I need to find the secret behind it, he added in his head.
âButââ Mercant objected.
Crest cut him off mid-sentence with a hand gesture. âMr. Mercant, I will take Miss Michalovna along with me. The two of us in Arkonide armorâI donât think there are many things that could stop us if weâre talking about technology on your level. But if there are defense mechanisms on the other side that are as technologically advanced as the transmitter, then it really wonât matter how many soldiers you send along with me.â
Mercant looked at him thoughtfully.
