The transmitter room was in an uproar . Mercant and several scientists were expecting them. Their conversations fell silent as Crest and Michalovna entered the room.

Crest glanced at the transmitter that now looked more complete than a few hours earlier. There was a strange ozone-like smell in the air, and a longer look at the transmitter revealed that blue sparks appeared to be dancing out of if like St. Elmo’s fire in some places.

“Impressive technology,” said Crest.

“We were hoping you would tell us that it’s an Arkonide secret,” replied Mercant drily.

He looked at Crest inquiringly. Crest had dressed after the doctor’s examination, but the clipboard in his hand made him look as though he were an accountant from another century who had turned up to take an inventory of the equipment.

“I’m sorry to have to disappoint you there,” answered Crest. “This is not Arkonide technology. It’s...different. Probably more advanced. Much more advanced, when I think about it.”

“But what does it do? And who created it?” Mercant looked inquisitively at the transmitter.

“A working transmitter, if I’m not mistaken. It creates a path to another place.” And this other place will hopefully bring me closer to the solution to the great mystery—the mystery of eternal life! This technology is way beyond anything we Arkonides could make.

Mercant’s voice jolted him out of his thoughts. “Then who created it? How did it get here?”

“I don’t know,” replied Crest. “But whoever built it certainly knew what they were doing...and the device would not be in an Arkonide base unless somebody was intending to use it here or it was set up for them to use here. And that’s exactly what I’d like to do now—use it.”

A silence fell over the room. Everybody looked at him incredulously. Mercant was the first to find his voice again. “Crest, you are much too important to us. Without you, we’d just be humans among humans. We’d be on our own with all this,” he made a sweeping gesture that was intended to include the deepsea dome “Completely alone.”

Crest gave an inscrutable smile. “Then, Mr. Mercant you’ll be in the same position with Arkonide technology as I am with that thing there.” He pointed, to the transmitter. “I’m actually an Arkonide Derengar. There’s no work for this in your language. I’d translate it as being something between an explorer and a scientist. I am just as fascinated by this technology as you are by ours. I simply have to know.” And I need to find the secret behind it, he added in his head.

“But—” Mercant objected.

Crest cut him off mid-sentence with a hand gesture. “Mr. Mercant, I will take Miss Michalovna along with me. The two of us in Arkonide armor—I don’t think there are many things that could stop us if we’re talking about technology on your level. But if there are defense mechanisms on the other side that are as technologically advanced as the transmitter, then it really won’t matter how many soldiers you send along with me.”

Mercant looked at him thoughtfully.
